Frequently Asked Questions

What is RoadSoft GIS?

RoadSoft is a graphically designed, integrated roadway management system developed for counties, cities and villages. It provides tools for the analysis and reporting of roadway inventory, condition and safety data

How can I get RoadSoft?

If you are a public agency outside of Michigan:

Contact CTT at 906-487-2102 or send email to roadsoft@mtu.edu

If you are a public agency in Michigan:

Send a letter or fax, on agency letterhead, signed by a person in authority, to 906-487-3409

  • Fax should include:

  • Name of person requesting RoadSoft

  • Address

  • Phone Number

  • Statement requesting RoadSoft and the jurisdiction needed, such as: County, City, Village, etc.

  • e-mail address (necessary for notification of version updates)

Is there user documentation to give me some guidance in using RoadSoft?

Yes. The entire RoadSoft user documentation is online as part of the software. Individual sections can be printed to hard copy if you prefer to have a version that you can make notes in.

Is RoadSoft training offered?

Yes. Training is offered at locations statewide twice a year and topic specific web-based seminars are offered regularly throughout the year. See the Training section for current offerings.

Can a consultant get RoadSoft?

The CTT can only provide RoadSoft to an agency with jurisdictional authority over a road network.  However, an agency can provide RoadSoft and their data to consultants in conjunction with work being performed.

I’m currently using another software program for my asset management; can that data be moved to RoadSoft?

Perhaps. We have had a great deal of success in the past moving most legacy data into RoadSoft, but we can not give you a definitive answer until we have seen your data.

Can I get more than one county?

Yes, provided that your agency meets the jurisdictional authority requirement.

How can I correct/update the Framework Basemap?

Contact the Michigan Center for Center for Shared Solutions and Technology Partnerships (CSSTP) for more information on forwarding corrections.

How do I get updated crash information?

Crash data for the previous calendar year is released to agencies in mid-summer.

How often is the Michigan Framework GIS Basemap updated?

The Michigan Center for Center for Shared Solutions and Technology Partnerships develops and maintains the Michigan Framework GIS Basemap. Release of the annual update takes place at the beginning of the calendar year so as to coincide with the annual data collection effort of the Transportation Asset Management Council

What are the system requirements for RoadSoft?

The RoadSoft  client can be run under Windows 2000 SP4. However, we do not recommend that since Microsoft Mainstream Support ended 06/30/2005 and Extended Support ends  07/13/2010. For similar end of support reasons we do not recommend using SQL Server prior to  SQL Server 2005 SP2.

Based on an amalgam of requirements for SQL Server 2005 Express,  .NET Framework 2, Windows XP SP2 and Vista;  the suggested system requirements for small to moderately sized agencies running RoadSoft standalone (client & database on one pc) are :

  • OS: Windows XP (SP2), Vista or Windows 7
  • Processor:   (minimum) 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor,   (recommended)2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon 64 X2
  • Memory: 1GB (minimum), 2GB (recommended)
  • Disk: 1 Gigabyte of free hard drive space (and up to 4GB per database)
  • CD-ROM: 16x or faster
  • Color Monitor 19"(minimum),  21" (recommended)
  • Video Adapter :  resolution 1280x1024 w/ 32 bit color mode 128 MB RAM(minimum(+)),   1600X1200 w/ 32 bit color mode, 512 MB RAM(recommended) (++)

(+) RoadSoft actually enforces a minimum resolution of 1024x768.

(++)Dual monitors can be useful; enabling forms to be opened without covering the map.

You should tend toward the "recommended" even for a RoadSoft client-only pc.

The largest agencies may need more computer power. Please contact RoadSoft tech support for information.

What does RoadSoft cost?

If you are a public agency in Michigan:

Your agency will be provided RoadSoft at no cost. This includes run-time licenses for unlimited seats at your agency, technical support and training.

See “How do I get RoadSoft?”

What projection are the RoadSoft shapefiles exports in for Michigan?

The RoadSoft GIS export is a .shp format file. The projection is the North American NAD83 (US State Plane) Michigan GeoRef Statewide Mapping System (NAD83 MI GeoRef.)

Does RoadSoft run on Windows Vista or Windows 7?

RoadSoft is compatible with Windows Vista.  However, it is strongly recommended that you disable User Account Control (UAC) for full compatiblity.  The UAC toggle can be found in Control Panel --> User Accounts --> User Accounts.
